Study Political Discussion at Work Strengthens Employee Satisfaction

Study Political Discussion at Work Strengthens Employee Satisfaction According to a recent study of couples on the work-and-home-life impact of political discussions in the office, talking politics at work can actually strengthen a workers job satisfaction and his or her commitment to the organization. These benefits are only if the discussion is an exchange of perspectives with give and take, as opposed to political pressuring to agree with a managers political ideas. The Nov. 1 study of 304 workers and their spouses was conducted by two professors at Utah State Universitys Jon M. Huntsman School of Business Merideth J. Ferguson, assistant professor of management and human resources expert and John Ferguson, lecturer of management and expert on the First Amendment and ethics.Political speech at work is not necessarily a badeanstalt thing, said Ferguson. In fact, when supervisors engage employees in a political discussion characterized by a sense of give and take, those subordinates experience more job satisfaction and higher commitment to the organization. Results also showed just how much political discussions at work can influence an employees life outside the office, including family life. Openly talking about politics can positively affect a workers family life, while political pressuring conversations can have negative effects.Possible negative effects includeDefiance against a supervisorWork-family conflictsSpouses concluding employees will look elsewhere for workEmployees considering ways of getting revenge on the coworkers if colleagues engage in political pressuringForty percent of the participants reported their supervisors pressuring them to accept his or her political ideas and perspective 55 percent reported a coworker pressuring them to do the same (accept coworkers views). Reversely, 55 percent reported to having a give and take conversation about politics wit h supervisors, while 79 percent reported the same type of conversation with a colleague. So many workplaces have policies in place restricting political speech, but with no real research to support these restrictions, said Ferguson. Many workplaces and workers could be missing out on the benefits of political discussion, especially when that discussion is handled appropriately.

10 Tips for Becoming a Successful Executive

10 Tips for Becoming a Successful Executive10 Tips for Becoming a Successful ExecutiveHere is your problem. You are an executive. You have worked hard and know you deserve to be in your current executive position. But your teams are failing and you are not sure why.You need some quick tips to turn things. These 10 tips help you become a successful executive.Be sure to commit to performing these tasks on a daily basis10. Check emails once a dayEngagement in emails leads to more and more engagement.Stop the madness before you get caught answering emails, starting a chain reaction that leads to 0% productivity,Check your emails once a day either when you first arrive or the hour before lunch.9. Stop using the word but in communicationsOddly, one of the very first lessons taught in Disneys guest service training program is, Never say but because it indicates a negative statement. Now, as an executive, that advice is still relevant for an additional reason. Read this next sentence and see i f you can tell whySo far, we have come a long way as a team, but there is still more we can do to succeed.Even though the sentence is trying to communicate something positive, usage of the word but negates the first half of the sentence. Try this insteadSo far, we have come a long way and we still can do more to succeed. The two sentences have two dynamics all because of one word.8. platzdeckchen busy time on your calendarYou need time to get things done.If meetings are leaving you too tired to be productive, watch what happens to you when you make time for yourself to get work done. Set busy time in your calendar. You start to learn quickly what meetings are important and when they should be scheduled or canceled.7. Be niceIt sounds so simple, yet so many leadersstruggle with how to be nice and when. Try these guidelinesKindnessHumilityFairnessPraise successExpress compassion when addressing a failureWe live in a different world. Cruel leadership can come under serious scrutiny in so cial media, leading to costly public relations issues and apology tours.Avoid all that mess. Be nice. 6. Take time to see the bigger pictureGet your hands dirty once in a while. Do not be a toxic absentee leader that presents orders and disappears.Getting yourself involved in everyones work for a time builds trust in your organization. As an executive, it also gives you a sense of the bigger picture ie. who and how your decisions affect everyone and the business.5. Create contingency plansgeschftliches miteinander plans are based on using past and present data to make future plans.Making one plan is putting all your eggs in one basket.Instead, make several plans for the best of times and the worst of times. Consider what happens if you have a great month and consider what happens if you have a terrible month. Investigate and analyze what drives your business and what does not.4. Maintain a regimen of proper health and personal careMany years ago, my stepmom worked as a senior executi ve for the global financial services firm, Lehman Brothers.Monday through Friday, she left work at 6 am every day. She came home by 6 pm. She ate dinner, watched her favorite TV show, and went to bed at 830 pm.On Saturdays, she had a spa appointment at 11am and got her hair and nails done. On Sunday, she played golf and went to church in the afternoon. She did this for nearly 25 years and was able to retire at age 57 in good health. And she worked her tail off in the process. She never would have been able to work as hard as she did, if her work regimen was unhealthy.3. Create pre-work ritualJumping from the car into the office chair is unsettling. It never gives you the time to disconnect from your commute.Your day seems longer because you never stopped to collect your thoughts before working.Your work day should not feel like a triathlon that started with your commute and ended when you got home. When you get to the office, get some water, think about how the day should go, and rela x until start time.2. Never work while in bedConnectivity is great, but not at the expense of productivity.Using your phone in bed to do work steals time from your sleep. It alsoleads to poor decision-making.1. Create and nurture positive relationships and let go of negative relationshipsWaking up every day with that attitude of, I will conquer the world requires nurturing relationships that help you feel powerful.Unfortunately, many hold onto negative relationships in the hopes they can one day fix them. But if a negative relationship is stealing from your positive relationships or attitude, cut it loose.Do not fall into the relationship trap of forgiving negativity one day because tomorrow it will be positive again. These relationships are roller coaster rides that distract from progredienz and mental health. Some relationships continue for far too long because we forget why they are bad over the weekend.Instead, nurture the full-time positive relationships by putting your energy an d dedication into relationships that progress with career growth.Above all, remember not all relationships are meant to last a lifetime. There are times when people simply outgrow each other. The relationship started with a purpose and that purpose is now finished. You can stay connected. Just stop trying to revive a positive energy that has clearly ended.

Flex Time and Alternative Work Schedules in the Legal Field

Flex Time and Alternative Work Schedules in the Legal FieldFlex Time and Alternative Work Schedules in the Legal FieldAchieving a balance between professional and personal life is a challenge in todays fast-paced legal industry. The traditional 8 to 5 Monday-Friday work schedule no longer suits many employees. Perhaps you have young children, are pursuing a degree, have a chronic medical condition or care for elderly parents. Whatever the reason, todays workplace offers a number of strategies to strike a better work-life balance. One way to gain more flexibility is through alternative work schedules that provide greater flexibility or reduced hours. Examples of alternative work schedules include flex time, staggered hours, part-time employment and job sharing. Flextime Letting employees work where they want and how they want is catching on in many law firms and legal departments. Flex time allows full-time employees to enjoy time off at certain times of the year most convenient to them and can include adjustable hours, workdays/weekends, holidays, and other work arrangements. Flex time helps employees meet the unpredictable demands of family life, illness, and personal emergencies. At the same time, these work options decrease employee stress, reduce sick leave, and increase productivity. Staggered Hours Aleidher growing initiative is staggered hours working a full work week during unconventional hours that best suit the employees schedule. Staggered hours are beneficial to women with school-aged children, employees pursuing an advanced degree and others with significant obligations outside the schreibstube. They allow a law firm to address the needs of its clients at all hours by increasing the span of employee presence. The traditional 8 to 5 Monday-Friday work week (representing only about 27% of a 7-day week) does not ideally serve clients in an industry that is increasingly 24/7 driven. Even some mega-firms permit staggered hours. A recent Legal Tim es article profiled one Washington D.C. attorney who arrived in the office every day at 6 a.m. and left by 255 p.m. to pick up her children from school. If you seek flexible arrangements but dont want to reduce your work schedule or compensation, a staggered hour arrangement might work for you. Part-Time Employment and Reduced-Hour Schedules Part-time employment is another great alternative work arrangement. According to a recent NALP survey, most large law firms make part-time schedules available to their experienced attorneys, and the large majority of part-time employees - about 75% - are women. While part-time employment was traditionally discouraged by law firms, it is becoming more commonplace as women and other groups demand a better work-life balance. Deborah Epstein Henry, the founder of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, notes that reduced hour schedules increase employee productivity and efficiency. Moreover, recent studies reveal that employers have reaped sizable economic gains after implementing workplace flexibility programs. Job Sharing Job sharing is another option to achieve work-life balance. Job sharing has existed for decades but, as more professionals seek a better work-life balance, job sharing in the legal industry has increased. Job sharing enables two legal professionals to share one position. Generally, the salary for the position is split between both employees based on the percentage of time worked. Job resources, such as workspace, computer, and office supplies, are also shared. Through job sharing, you can enjoy all the benefits of your present position benefits, status, skills enhancement while enjoying a reduced schedule.

The only real way to acquire wisdom

The only real way to acquire wisdom The only real way to acquire wisdom It’s often been said  that  wisdom is the art of knowing that you are not wise. The great philosopher Socrates famously  denied being wise  more than two thousand years ago, and since then, we have taken him at his word. There is a truth there, but that  definition  isn’t very helpful.  I mean, I’m all for respecting uncertainty, doubting oneself, and realizing the limitations of my mind, but I think we can  do better. Maybe  even take a few steps forward.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  More importantly, I think we can create our own definition that separates it from just mere intelligence and then use that definition to illustrate why the distinction matters and how we can practically engage it in everyday life.Intelligence is commonly  associated  with knowing something.  Often,  it also means that we can confidently  apply what we know in a particular context.Wisdo m, to me, is different. It’s different  because  it has more dimensions.  Wisdom not only knows, but it also understands.  And  the  distinction between knowing and understanding is what makes things interesting.Knowing is generally factual. You have learned a particular kind of knowledge and you know its truth as it applies to a particular problem.Understanding, however, is more fluid.  You have learned a particular kind of knowledge, but you don’t see it as a fact or a truth applied rigidly to one thing.Rather,  you  understand that knowledge’s essence and you can see how it relates to everything else,  with  nuances  and contradictions included. The difference is  subtle  but  potent.  While  intelligence gives you specific  utility,  wisdom inspires flexible  versatility.  It  provides a more textured lens for interacting  with reality,  very much changing how you think.Building relational knowledgeEvery time you have a  perspective shift, big or small, you gain knowledge.Y ou learn something new that you maybe didn’t know before, and as a result, your mind then changes itself regarding whatever that knowledge pertains to in the future. Next time, there is an added clarity. If the acquired knowledge is understood, rather than just known, however, there is another step that occurs every time your mind shifts. If you’re a student, for example, and you’re writing an exam, and it’s a difficult one, let’s say you decide to cheat. Now, unfortunately, when you cheat, you get caught. It leads to a failing grade in the course. The thing to learn from this experience that would add to your intelligence would be the fact that cheating on an exam has consequences, and  those consequences, while  improbable,  have a  disproportionately  negative impact on your life.  It’s simply not worth it in the future. The extra step that would translate the intelligence in that particular scenario into broadly applicable wisdom  would be to realize that not only is  no t worth cheating on an exam due to the harsh consequences,  but that  most things in the world that carry  disproportionately  costly risks should be approached  cautiously, whether they be financial decisions or personal life choices. This is, of course, a very simplified  scenario,  but  the point is that  knowledge is relational and the understanding of wisdom recognizes that rather than treating it simply as an isolated information point.Instead of the lesson being that cheating is bad, you  combine the essence of the knowledge learned from that experience with your  existing  latticework  of previous knowledge  to really  hammer  home the underlying principle. This way, you understand how taking shortcuts may harm your personal relationships, how your new understanding of risk may inform your business practices, and  how  what you say matters beyond why you say it.Knowledge is always best  leveraged  when it’s connected to other knowledge.Creating an information networkIn  netw ork science, there is a now-famous effect called  Metcalfe’s  law.It was first used to describe the growth of telecommunication networks, but over time, the application has been extended beyond that.  It essentially states that  the value of a network rises with the number of connected users. In any network, each thing of interest is a node and the connection between such things is a link.  The number of  nodes  themselves doesn’t necessarily reflect the value of a network, but the number of links between those nodes does. For example, ten independent phones by themselves aren’t really all that useful. What makes them useful is the connection that they have to other phones.  And the more they are connected to other phones, the more useful they are because the more access they have to each other.Well,  the relationship between different kinds of knowledge in our mind works the same way.  The more  connected  they are to each other, the more valuable the information network that w e have in our brain is.Every time you gain knowledge, you are either isolating it within a narrow context  where it’s addressing a particular problem,  or you are breaking it down a little further so that you can connect that knowledge to the already existing information you’ve  accumulated  so far.In this scenario,  intelligence is found within a pocket of information by itself.  Wisdom, however, is accumulated in the process of creating new links. Each node of knowledge in your mind is a mental model of some aspect of reality, but  that  mental model isn’t fully complete until  it’s been stripped down and  re-contextualized  in light of the information contained in the other mental models of knowledge around it.The only way to acquire wisdom is to think  in terms of the whole information network rather than the  individual  nodes that it contains. That’s where  nuance  is considered, that’s where the respect for complexity comes in, and  that’s how specialized informat ion finds its flexibility. The  strength of your mind depends on the value of your information network. The takeawayThe  quest  for wisdom is an age-old effort. It’s one many have recommended. It’s been said to be as useful for finding inner  contentment  as it is for fueling external successes.  It’s a more  prudent  way of interacting with reality. While not everyone’s definition of wisdom is the same, it doesn’t seem too  far-fetched  to distinguish it by a mode of deeper understanding.  One that goes beyond just the knowing we commonly associate with intelligence. When we think of the  acquisition  of  intelligence, we think of new information inspired by  a perspective-shift that tells us a truth about one aspect of reality.Wisdom goes further  than  that.  It  strips  that same information  down to its essence so that it can relate the underlying principle of that knowledge to the existing information network  that exists in the mind. It’s the  connectedness  of this net work that separates it from mere intelligence. The more links between each pocket of information, the more valuable the whole network will be when  tackling  any other problem.  It adds an extra dimension to each mental model contained in the mind.Simply knowing this doesn’t make a person more equipped to  soak  in wisdom, but with  awareness and practice, new thinking patterns can be created. The way you do this shapes everything else. It’s worth working on.This article originally appeared on Design Luck. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

10-year-old girl asks her school for a day off to join the Womens Strike

10-year-old girl asks her school for a day off to join the Women's Strike 10-year-old girl asks her school for a day off to join the Women's Strike March 8 is the  Day Without Women, in which women will refuse to spend money and stay home from work to show their economic power. One young girl is asking for a day off work to join the protest - and her job is elementary school. In an impressive lesson, Lottie Moreschi showed keen professional instincts about how to ask for a day off work.  It started when Raleigh, North Carolina native Laura Moreschi had a lively conversation with her three young daughters about activism and ways to protest.Lottie, her 10-year-old, was determined to participate- but, unlike other nearby schools, her school had decided not to close for the day.  Lottie decided she would accept one unexcused absence for the occasion- but she wanted to handle it “like a grown-up.” So she wrote a letter to her principal explaining why she planned to take March 8th off.“I would like to participate in the ‘Day Without Women’ protest,” Lottie wrote, describing her plans for the day: “I am going to write a letter to the editor, contact my congressman, and do whatever I can to make my voice heard.”As for schoolwork, she has it handled: “I will get my schoolwork ahead of time,” wrote Lottie, who displayed the well-established characteristic of women to prepare heavily for big challenges.Lottie’s mom says she is proud of her daughter, not only for her decision to support women’s rights, but in how maturely she handled the effects of her actions.“I have never participated in a ‘strike’ before, and haven’t even protested for many years, but I am so in awe of her engagement,” Moreschi told Ladders. While Lottie was confident in her request, many women may hesitate to ask for the day off if they wish to participate in the Day Without Women. Lottie is no corporate veteran, but there are several lessons any adult can learn from how she handled taking the day off.She was directLottie came right out with her request in the very first sentence of her letter. People often bury requests they’re afraid may not be received favorably. Being direct, however, helps your case. Bosses are busy and don’t want to spend their day on email figuring out what you’re trying to say.She clearly explained why she needed the day offIf you want to take a day off for an urgent or specific reason, it helps to say why. Some kids might just be looking for an excuse to ditch school. Lottie, however, has a well thought-out plan for her day away from school, which shows why her absence should be excused - and it sends a message to her principal that she values social causes.Whether you’re planning to take March 8th off so you too can support a cause- or there’s another day when you feel your presence is needed elsewhere- it’s important to explain what you’ll be doing to your supervisor. That way they’ll be more inclined to support your requests in the future. She assured her principal she’d still get her work doneLottie isn’t shirking her schoolwork. She is p articipating in the Day Without A Woman protest in order to stand up for her convictions. That being said, her absence from school doesn’t mean she can’t get her work done. This may not always be possible when taking a personal day, but if you can, it’s a good idea to explain how you plan to make up for your absence. If you outline how you plan to stay on top of your work, your boss will continue to see you as a responsible employee who isn’t looking to shirk any duties.  Lottie’s even inspired her younger sister to participate in the strike with her, and write a similarly well-penned letter to her principal. One important factor: If women feel they can’t afford to take time off, and they want to participate in the same cause as Lottie, there are a number of other ways  to show support.

Why People Lie on Their Resume (and Why You Shouldnt!)

Why People Lie on Their Resume (and Why You Shouldnt!) Why People Lie on Their Resume (and Why You Shouldnt!) As one of the country’s leading resume writing companies, ResumeSpice knows how competitive the job  market can be. Unfortunately, in their battle to land a job, some candidates are tempted to stretch the truth on  their resumes. In fact, some studies estimate that over half of all resumes contain some fibs. We’re here to warn you that if a lie is caught on a resume, two scenarios can occur: If a lie is uncovered during hiring, you will be removed from the hiring process, which would be a disaster if you were a perfect fit for that position. If you’re hired and then the lie is discovered, you could get fired for providing misinformation during the hiring process. Either way, your best bet is to stick to the truth. What areas are candidates commonly exaggerating, inventing, or flat out lying about on their resumes? Let’s take a look: Employment History If you worked with a company for six months, don’t try to stretch it out to a year.   Remember, it’s okay to round up a month when you worked some time in that same month, but don’t try to stretch your employment dates or lie about gaps in employment. It’s a silly lie and it’s easily discovered through a reference phone call or email. Job Titles Job titles are one of the most common areas employment-seekers try to lie about. They may attempt to pump up their title by adding a “senior” in front of it, or invent a position that doesn’t even exist in the company. In most cases, hiring managers will research your work history before they offer you the job. Don’t ruin your chances of your dream job by trying to create new job titles that your previous employer can’t confirm. Education If you don’t meet the educational requirements to get the job, don’t lie about it on your resume. All it takes is one quick phone call or email for an employer to verify your educational background. If you’re currently attending school, it’s okay to list that on your resume, just make sure it is clear that you have not received your degree yet. References Reference checking is one of the last steps in the hiring process. If you’ve made it to this far, don’t sabotage all your efforts by providing a potential hiring manager with fake references. In addition, avoid giving your friends and family acting lessons to impersonate someone else. Instead, talk to your coworkers and see if you have anyone who would be willing to provide a reference. Skill Level When you lie about your skill level on your resume, you could really be setting yourself up for failure. Should you get hired, you may not have the knowledge and experience to actually perform on the job. For instance, if the position requires SharePoint design and you only know the basics, you could be in for a struggle. Instead, highlight your ability to learn and adapt to new pieces of software on the job. Most potential employers don’t expect perfection. However, they do expect candidates to be honest about their background and experience. If you’re not, and you do get hired, you may find yourself constantly be looking over your shoulder. Don’t dismiss what you bring to the table by stretching the truth it’s not worth it. Need more help creating a strong resume â€" let us help! Thought-Controlled Robot Arm

Thought-Controlled Robot Arm Thought-Controlled Robot Arm Thought-Controlled Robot Arm The servile robots of the future will be controlled not with joysticks, smart phones, or voice commands, but with thoughts. Already, mind-controlled robots have allowed a paralyzed man to feel again through a robotic hand, and a quadriplegic woman to use a robotic arm to grab a bottle and drink. But both of these cases required a chip to be implanted in the brain of the robot controller, a costly and sensitive procedure, to say the least. Now theres a way to make robots obedient to thoughts without the requirement of brain surgery. Instead of a chip implant, the new method uses and EEG cap to measure brain waves. Its non-invasive, theres no risk, and its cheap, says Bin He, a biomedical engineering professor at the University of Minnesota, who lead the research. With the cap strapped on their heads, 13 human volunteers were able to make an off-the-shelf robotic arm grab an object, move it to a shelf, and, finally, release it. His subjects were all healthy, able-bodied students with full use of their limbs. So the signal they needed to generate was not the same as simply willing their actual arms and hands to move and grip as they normally would. Instead, He directed them to imagine they were performing these tasks without actually doing it. Previous work by He showed that imagining a movement and actually performing it are not that different, at least from the point of view of fMRI scans and the EEG cap. What is the difference, or the similarity, between imagining youre moving compared to actually moving? We found a very nice co-localization in terms of activity between fMRI findings and EEG imaging findings in both movement imagination and actual movement. Research subjects fitted with a specialized noninvasive brain cap were able to move the robotic arm by imagining moving their own arms. Image: University of Minnesota But eager robot masters will need to do more than just slap on the cap and put their imagination to use. It does require a relatively lengthy training process, says He. Subjects go to Hes lab once a week, for two hour sessions. It takes 10 to 15 such sessions before a subject has mastered the technique. For some subjects we ask them to execute the actual movement, to help them get a feel for how they should imagine moving. Usually we ask them to move an arm and then not to move it, but to imagine how you moved it before, he says. Were teaching them the skill of motor imagination. Once theyve got a feel for that kind of imagining, they try to move a cursor on a screen form left to right. Then they graduate to grasping, releasing, and moving the arm, in a step-by-step process. The subjects arent the only ones who are learning. The software adapts to them as well, learning the peculiarities of how each subject imagines movement. Hes next step is to train amputees. Will the signal they generate be similar to that of Hes able-limbed subjects so far? He thinks theyll be similar. But we need to work out the details. The applications for non-invasive mind-controlled robots is vast. Those without the full use of their arms will be glad to have a new one at their disposal, to be sure, but there are many other people who stand to benefit. Imagine having an extra arm for playing the piano, piloting a plane, or performing any task where both flesh-and-blood arms are busy. But before applications functional or futuresque become a reality theres much work to be done. He wants to improve the control resolution as well as shorten the training periods. But however the technology is eventually adapted and adopted, the first major achievement has been made. Its the first time, to our knowledge, that its been demonstrated that a human subject can perform sophisticated 3D control using EEG signals. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. Usually we ask them move an arm and then not to move it, but to imagine how you moved it before. Were teaching them the skill of motor imagination.Prof. Bin He, University of Minnesota

How Marie Kondo treated people differently after this advice on success

How Marie Kondo treated people differently after this advice on success How Marie Kondo treated people differently after this advice on success Marie Kondo, queen of thoughtful tidying, has rocketed to fame with two books (and an upcoming one about the workplace!) and her Netflix show, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” But even domestic goddesses slip sometimes, and she admitted to Inc.  that she wasn’t always so thoughtful.close dialogAdvertisementclose dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012257 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close { z-index: 2;}@-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -ms-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -ms-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -moz-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -moz-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @keyframes bx-anim-1012257-s pin { from { transform: rotate(0deg); } to { transform: rotate(360deg); } } #bx-close-inside-1012257 { top: 0; right: 0; }/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *:first-child {padding: 0;width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative {background-color: transparent;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close {stroke: white;background-color: black;border-style: solid;border-color: white;border-width: 1px;box-shadow: 0px 0px 0px 3px black;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-group-1012257-3RBnJGC {position: absolute;top: 50%;left: 50%;transform: translate(-50%, -50%);z-index: -1;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-wryzWV5 {width: 55px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-wryzWV5 *:first-child {animation-name: bx-anim-1012257-spin;animation-duration: 800ms;animation-iteration-count: infinite;animation-timing-function: linear;}.bxc.bx-campai gn-1012257 .bx-group-1012257-lyDBLV9 {width: 900px;height: 550px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-group-1012257-me4p1bl {padding: 10px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-ZdLO37u {width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-ZdLO37u *:first-child {padding: 2px 4px;font-size: 10px;color: rgb(255, 255, 255);text-transform: uppercase;background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34);}In the wake of success following the publication of her first book, unexpected advice from her father made her more mindful and changed her relationship with success to this day.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In 2015, Kondo was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, and a Japanese television station interviewed her father about his thoughts on her making the list.  He told the cameras, “When you receive recognition from others for wha t you’ve accomplished, it is a reflection not only of your own efforts but also those of the people who have supported you along the way.”All about the gratitudeHis words had a big impact on Kondo, who felt like she’d built up her business “all by myself,” as she told Inc. Project Management Lingo

Project Management Lingo Project Management Lingo Project management is a job that comes with a lot of jargon and terminology. Once you know what it all means, it’s pretty easy to follow the discussions and contribute effectively. It will boost your confidence at work if you can understand what everyone else is talking about, and help you get taken more seriously at work if you use the right terms yourself. Here’s a guide to the project management terms that you should know. Risk ‘Risk’ is a term that relates to what might go wrong with your project. For example, if you are building a new office block, the price of steel might go up, and that might have an effect on your budget. But it might not go up. Equally, if you are planning on hosting your annual corporate picnic outside, it might be fine weather, but it might rain. In short, a risk is something that hasn’t happened yet. It’s important to know what risks surround your project because then you can plan for them. You can put your ‘Plan B’ or contingency plans into action to try to avoid the risk happening in the first place. With the price of steel and the weather, there’s not much you can actually do to stop them from happening, but you can make plans in case they do. For example, you could hire a marquee or stock up with umbrellas so that if it does rain on picnic day, people can still have a good time. Issue Issues and risks are often confused by project team members, and it’s important as a project manager to make sure you are talking about these subjects appropriately. A risk is something that hasn’t happened yet, while an issue is something that has happened. Issues are just problems that your project team is facing. You might have seen it coming (and handled it as a risk to start with) or it might be completely unexpected. Either way, it’s happened now and you have to do something about it. Milestone Milestones are points in time that mark key moments during the project. They are often used for: Start of a phaseEnd of a phaseEnd of a major piece of work or a big taskNoting a particular fixed-in-time deadlineImmovable dates on the plan Think of milestones as the kind of date that you would write on your calendar at home â€" the big important moments in a project such as finishing the testing or the launch party. Milestones are one of the nine components of a Gantt chart, so you’ll see them on your project schedules displayed as a diamond. Sponsor Your project sponsor sits on the Project Board. They are the person who ‘owns’ the project and they receive the benefits. For example, if you are launching a new IT system for the factory team to use, the Factory General Manager would be the project sponsor. The IT team would form part of the project team but they wouldn’t take on a sponsorship role. The project sponsor is the person you can turn to when you need senior management direction. This could be ?in order to: Unblock a problemFind some resourcesApprove the budgetMake decisionsAgree on the final specification And so on. The project manager effectively reports to the sponsor for the duration of the project, both in terms of line management structure and with weekly or monthly (or real-time) project reporting. Stakeholder Stakeholders are the other people involved in and affected by your project. Some projects will have wide stakeholder groups, covering every department in the organization. Others will have a more limited scope. Some stakeholders are outside your organization, like the government or regulatory bodies. They also need to be kept informed with news that is relevant. Most stakeholders will be supportive (or ambivalent) to the changes brought about by your project, but not all of them will be. You’ll meet stakeholders who are not are going to welcome your project with open arms.

3 Ways Your Unconscious Bias Affects Your Workplace

3 Ways Your Unconscious Bias Affects Your Workplace 3 Ways Your Unconscious Bias Affects Your Workplace You are not racist or sexist. You make sure that you consider only knowledge, skills, and abilities when you’re making your hiring decisions. You are an equal opportunity employer. And yet, you still have unconscious biases. Don’t worry. All people do. Your brain looks at occurrences in the past and makes snap judgments for you without your having to think about them. That’s why the bias is unconscious. It takes concentration and effort to not allow your unconscious mind to become sucked in by bias. Because your brain is conscious and makes decisions based on past experience, you may think this is okay. And often it can be. There are real differences between engineers and marketers, so it makes sense that you might offer something to the engineers and not the marketers, based on your past interactions. And most likely, you’re right.   But, you have to make sure that you don’t fall into the trap of thinking, Because more people in group A like this, all people in group A like this.” That’s where your unconscious bias gets you in trouble. Here are three ways in which unconscious bias is affecting your workplace. Which Employee Is Asked to Travel for Business? Bill and Jane are both IT consultants. Jane is married with two children. Bill is single. A client needs a complex problem handled, on-site, a plane ride away. It will take three weeks to do this project during which time the employee will only come home on weekends. This project is a great opportunity for an employee to showcase their skills and will position whoever participates in this project for a promotion in the near future. Who do you ask to take on the project? Do you ask Bill because Jane won’t want to travel? Mothers of young children don’t want to go on long business trips, right? Statistically, your feelings about mothers may be right, but you’re not dealing with statistics. You’re dealing with humans. You don’t know if Jane wants to travel to perform the showcase project unless you ask her. You need to make your selection based on who you believe is most qualified and best suited for the role. You must make this decision regardless of the gender or parenthood status of the employee. If the person you selected doesn’t want to go, he or she will tell you. They deserve the chance to make that decision. Unconscious bias is not just about this one trip- it’s decisions and opportunities like this that can make or break your employee’s career. Your unconscious bias can impact Jane’s career negatively. Who Needs to Receive a Raise? Traditionally, men are thought of as the breadwinners in the family, so of course men need to make more money. Does that thought run through your head when you consider giving out raises? Is the thought (bias) in the back of your brain somewhere? If so, this unconscious bias affects what you think is an appropriate raise for your employees. Pay should have nothing to do with what an employee’s financial obligations are- only with what the employee contributes to the business. The same issue is in play if you are paying a single mother more money because you believe she needs it. You may feel compassionate, but it’s illegal to pay an employee more because of their gender, whether the employee is male or female. Of course, the unconscious bias isn’t limited to the actual pay when it comes to a raise. If your unconscious bias is that women who are straightforward are pushy and men who are straightforward are confident doers, then you’re more likely to reward the man for the same behavior for which you’re punishing his female colleagues. It’s that ugly unconscious bias showing up again. How Do You Decide Who Gets the Promotion? Women make great kindergarten teachers, but lousy principals superficially. 76 percent of teachers are female, but only 52 percent of principals. Is this due to choice- women are choosing to stay in teaching roles and men are choosing to work towards a promotion to principal? Or is this difference due to the unconscious bias of the decision makers? Make sure you sit down and think when you’re promoting an employee and deciding among candidates. Are you looking at skills? Are you looking at dedication? Are you looking at past contributions? Or are you letting your feelings from your previous experiences influence your decision making? This doesn’t apply just along racial and gender lines but also applies along many other issues. You were bullied by a kid named Kevin and so Kevin in your office just rubs you the wrong way and you can’t figure out why. It’s your unconscious bias peeking through. How to Fix Your Unconscious Bias You can take unconscious bias tests, but they won’t fix the problem- they just let you know that the problem exists. And the test won’t address any issue that isn’t along gender, racial, or cultural lines. In other words, the test won’t indicate that you are biased against people named Kevin.  But, what you can do is flip the question around to test it. HR executive Kristen Pressner created this simple test: flip it to test it. If you think it’s okay to say, “We promote women at a higher rate than our competitors,” flip the statement around and say, “We promote men at a higher rate than our competitors.” You will quickly see that your original statement is biased. Another fix for unconscious bias is to write out your reasoning for your decision. Just exactly why are you asking Bill but not Jane to take on the big travel project? Why are you promoting this person over that person? If you’re not willing to stand up in court and read this list of reasons, you’re probably making the wrong decision for the wrong reasons. Unconscious bias will always exist in people making decisions in the workplace, but they can work hard to become aware of their unconscious bias and overcome it.
